The benefits of martial arts are innumerable. There are many ways that what kids learn on the mat, bleed into their daily lives and the way they navigate the world around them. Today we will focus on a few that are specific to your child’s performance in school.
#1 Discipline
- As part of our discipline & structure, students at SSTKD are asked to control their minds, mouths, and bodies. This is our elementary definition of the TKD Tenet ‘Self Control’. They learn to control their bodies to keep their fellow students and themselves safe. They control their mouths by not speaking while the instructor is speaking and not speaking out of turn. They control their minds by focusing on the task at hand. An example would be learning their TKD form, a new skill, or balancing.
- Everything mentioned above may sound similar to what kids are asked to do in an academic classroom. The difference is we get to be active, learn to move our bodies in new ways, and have fun while doing it!
#2 Focus
- The length of our classes reflects the amount of time we have seen proven to work for each age group’s attention span. Our class structures are designed to keep students engaged, active, and give them opportunities to listen and follow directions.
- Being active regularly is proven to benefit a kid’s ability to focus in the classroom. If you’ve ever ‘felt better’ after a workout, that’s a part of it! There are scientifically proven benefits for a child’s emotional and physical well-being, and the brain’s ability to function well.
#3 Confidence
- One of the ways that we can build confidence is by setting small goals and reaching them. Our Taekwondo curriculum is designed with small, attainable, and short-term goals as well as big and long-term goals. Students light up when they receive a stripe they’ve worked hard for or pass their rank promotion testing.
- Finding their confidence in our TKD school can help boost their confidence at their academic school. This can be shown through their social skills and gaining of new friends, an improvement in academic performance, and even standing up to bullies.
