April has been a whirlwind here at SSTKD. We started the month off with belt testing, awards, games, and fight night. We are so proud of our students who work so very hard in their martial arts training. Beginner ranks are learning so many new skills but they showed up to class during the cycle and then really put their skills to the test at testing. Intermediate ranks are new/newish to sparring and they really demonstrated that they have learned control and are learning efficient sparring technique. Our Junior Advanced ranks had a really tough test in February so they entered the previous cycle with goals and strategy to improve the skills required of them. These guys showed perseverance and work ethic throughout the cycle then came in ready to fight for their new rank at testing. Becoming a resilient human being is not done in the comfortable but rather the hard parts of life. We can’t gush enough on these guys for how much they showed up for themselves.

Our awards ceremony had the most black belts in one day than we’ve ever had! There were so many new belts that we even had 2 tables; that’s a first for our school! Our games night is a celebration of the dedication students have had through the cycle. You can attend games and fight night regardless of passing or no-changing your test. Come and celebrate your hard work and the hard work of your peers.  Click here for a 1st person perspective of what it's like to be Mr. Strouss during Guppy Guts.

Another first for our school was our Parents Night Out: Nerf Wars Edition. We had so much fun with all those that attended. Click here to see the video of the end of the night! So many nerf bullets lost, loads of pizza slices eaten, and tons of battle ball wins were had on this night. Thank you to everyone who attended and a special thank you to everyone who helped make this night possible!

After each testing, black belts and current instructors have the opportunity to test for the next level of instructor ranking called “collar testing”. If you see our instructors in full uniform, they will have either a red or black collar. The color and size of the collar represents a different instructor level. These tests are not easy. You must at least demonstrate the knowledge of all the ranks that you’ve learned so far. (that’s a lot of moves) This SuperStorm, Mr. Greene and Mrs. Henderson each tested and passed their collar tests! Congratulations to both of you!

We have officially tested our very first class of Krav Maga students! (Another 1st for our school!)  Everyone who tested is now a Yellow Belt rank in Krav Maga. In case you don’t know, Krav Maga is an Israeli Combat Self Defense discipline that teaches real-life scenario self defense techniques. There are no patterns or forms like in Taekwondo but you do have to demonstrate a list of skills learned for each rank. These skills build upon one another as you go through the ranks. Here is our first class! (a few not pictured)

Mr. Strouss continued his Krav Maga training at an event in Arkansas at the end of April. He has come back very excited about the new skills and techniques he has learned and cannot wait to share them with all of our Krav Maga students. He has now become a Level 2 Instructor with Krav Maga!

There are so many exciting things coming up for the summer months! Stay tuned.

May: Moms Train Free, Women’s Self Defense Class, Black Belt Conference, and Leadership Meeting. Summer CrossTraining begins in June as well as our skills clinic Fridays!
